It can be tempting to cover our little ones’ feet as soon as they start walking. We want to protect them, avoid injuries or discomfort, especially outdoors. But the reality is surprising:  walking barefoot is often much safer and more stimulating for their development.

Why is walking barefoot beneficial?

  • Improved proprioception  : by walking barefoot, the child feels the ground beneath their feet. This develops their balance, coordination, and body awareness in space.
  • Stronger muscles  : the muscles of the feet and ankles work better without strain, which supports good motor development.
  • Preventing poor posture  : unsuitable shoes too early (rigid soles, heels, excessive arch support) can disrupt the natural growth of the foot and influence overall posture in the long term.

Studies in pediatrics and podiatry clearly show that children should spend  as much time as possible barefoot , especially in their early years.

The pitfalls of “fancy” shoes

In stores, you see a lot of baby shoes with:

  • thick, rigid soles,
  • a small heel,
  • a narrow point.

These models are attractive, but they  restrict the natural movement of the foot . As a result, the child can trip more easily, lose balance, and develop bad walking habits.

But what to do outside?

Of course, walking barefoot isn’t always possible: wet ground, pebbles, cold, or dirt. In these cases, it’s recommended to opt for  so-called “minimalist” or “barefoot” shoes  :

  • thin and flexible sole,
  • no elevation (zero drop),
  • width adapted to allow the toes to spread naturally
  • non-toxic and breathable materials.

My personal choice

I’ve wondered about this for a long time. In my work with young children, I saw many children arrive wearing rigid and “fashionable” shoes, but which actually hindered their comfort and development.

With my child, I decided to do things differently:

  • At home and in safe environments  → most often barefoot.
  • Outside, when the ground is rough or wet  → I opt for “free movement” shoes.
